I’m Matheus Malburg, a Brazilian writer and director. I’ve been filming and editing since I was a kid, and I started directing at the end of high school, when I made Adeus, Geral, a documentary about the gentrification of Brazilian football stadiums.

I studied film at FAAP, graduating in 2020. While there, I directed (L)os Visitantes, a documentary about Latin American football fans who cross the continent to watch their teams play. The film won Best Short Film at Cinefoot.

My graduation short, Yuta, tells the fictional story of two Chacarita fans traveling to Brazil for a football match. The film screened at the club’s headquarters in Buenos Aires and went on to festivals such as Camerimage and Watersprite. I’m currently developing the feature-length version, now in its second draft.

In 2022, I directed Ainda Estamos Aqui, a short romance about ex-lovers who run into each other at a party, selected for Bogoshorts, Nòt, and Camerimage.

Two years later, I directed Chica, a short about childhood, two siblings, and a chicken that dreams of flying. The film took part in Ventana Sur’s VS-Corto, joined The Short Film Lab, and won two awards, including a spot at Málaga Talents.

Most recently, I began developing my next short, Flanelinhas, at the Linz Talent Academy. The project explores the lives of Brazilian car guards outside football matches and will be pitched at the Short Film Corner during the Cannes Film Festival.

Alongside my own projects, I’ve worked as an assistant director, creative researcher, and editor on films and series for Netflix, HBO, and Paris Filmes, collaborating closely with directors such as Esmir Filho.
